The Collages: King Trumpet
(NL) In mijn zoektocht door de schaduwen stuitte ik op een archetype dat onze huidige tijd domineert: de Schreeuwende Koning. In het Book of Shadows is er een spread die geen schoonheid nastreeft, maar een noodzakelijke rauwheid. Het is de verbeelding van een explosie—niet alleen van een stem, maar van een rijk dat gebouwd is op goud en retoriek.
De tekst bij dit werk, over 'King Trumpet' en zijn afbrokkelende kasteel, is geen politiek pamflet. Het is een mythische observatie van hubris: de hoogmoed die altijd voorafgaat aan de val.
We zien een muur die niet langer de vijand buitenhoudt, maar de eigen mensen opsluit in hun vlucht. En terwijl het stof neerdaalt, stellen we de cynische vraag: wachten we echt weer op een 'Black Knight' om ons te redden? Of durven we eindelijk te erkennen dat de ridder die ons niet komt redden, ons dwingt om zelf op te staan?
(ENG) In my search through the shadows, I stumbled upon an archetype that dominates our current era: the Screaming King. In the Book of Shadows, there's a spread that doesn't strive for beauty, but for a necessary rawness. It's the depiction of an explosion—not just of a voice, but of an empire built on gold and rhetoric.
The text accompanying this work, about "King Trumpet" and his crumbling castle, isn't a political pamphlet. It's a mythic observation of hubris: the pride that always precedes the fall.
We see a wall that no longer keeps out the enemy, but traps its own people in their flight. And as the dust settles, we ask the cynical question: are we really waiting for another "Black Knight" to save us? Or do we dare finally acknowledge that the knight who doesn't come to save us is forcing us to rise up ourselves?
When King Trumpet's loud mouth finally explodes,
his empire collapses
and his bloody golden castle crumbles;
his starved people,
dressed in rags,
will be stopped in their escape
by this Great Wall
paid for by the neighbors.
Maybe, just maybe,
some Black Knight
may come to save
your sorry ass again.
De Visuele Dialoog: Van Schreeuw naar Stilte
De Linkerzijde (De Schreeuw): De uitsnede van de schreeuwende mond is niet langer alleen een uiting van woede, maar het exacte moment van de "explosie" waar de tekst over spreekt. Het is het geluid van een ineenstortend rijk. De versplintering in de collage weerspiegelt de fragmentatie van de waarheid.
De Rechterzijde (De Grimmige Toekomst): Waar men aanvankelijk rust zou kunnen vermoeden, ziet de criticus nu een vallenlandschap. De "Great Wall" uit de tekst transformeert de rechterpagina tot een claustrofobische barrière. Het is een wrange ironie: de muur die bedoeld was om anderen buiten te houden, wordt nu de gevangenis voor het eigen, uitgehongerde volk.
De Black Knight en de Valse Hoop
De referentie naar de "Black Knight" die "your sorry ass" moet redden, voegt een bittere laag van hopeloosheid toe. In de iconografie staat de Zwarte Ridder vaak voor een figuur zonder meester, of zelfs de dood. De criticus zou dit interpreteren als een cynische sneer naar het wachten op een verlosser die niet komt, of die erger is dan de tiran die hij vervangt.
Samenhang: De Cyclus van Geweld
De relatie tussen foto 2 (de uitsnede) en de volledige spread is nu die van oorzaak en gevolg. De uitsnede is de kiem van het kwaad (de retoriek, de schreeuw), de rechterpagina is de wrange oogst (het puin, de honger, de muur).
Kunstcritische Conclusie: Van Eck hanteert hier de collage niet als decoratie, maar als politiek-mythische satire. Door de "Buren" te laten betalen voor de muur die de vlucht van het eigen volk stopt, sluit de auteur de cirkel van populisme op een huiveringwekkende manier. Het is een waarschuwing dat de "Shadow" uit de titel ook de schaduw van een beschaving kan zijn die haar eigen ondergang financiert. De esthetiek is niet langer 'mooi', maar noodzakelijk lelijk en confronterend.
Dit is een van de meest politiek geladen pagina's in het boek, waarbij de sjamanistische reis even wordt onderbroken voor een ijzingwekkende blik in de maatschappelijke afgrond.

The Left Side (The Scream): The cutout of the screaming mouth is no longer simply an expression of anger, but the precise moment of the "explosion" the text speaks of. It is the sound of a collapsing empire. The fragmentation in the collage reflects the fragmentation of truth.
The Right Side (The Grim Future): Where one might initially expect tranquility, the critic now sees a landscape of falling. The "Great Wall" from the text transforms the right-hand page into a claustrophobic barrier. It is a bitter irony: the wall that was meant to keep others out now becomes a prison for one's own starving people.
The Black Knight and False Hope
The reference to the "Black Knight" who is supposed to save "your sorry ass" adds a bitter layer of hopelessness. In iconography, the Black Knight often represents a figure without a master, or even death. The critic would interpret this as a cynical dig at the expectation of a savior who never comes, or who is worse than the tyrant he replaces.
Coherence: The Cycle of Violence
The relationship between photo 2 (the crop) and the full spread is now one of cause and effect. The crop is the seed of evil (the rhetoric, the scream), the right-hand page is the bitter harvest (the rubble, the hunger, the wall).
Art Critic Conclusion:
Van Eck uses the collage here not as decoration, but as political-mythical satire. By making the "Neighbors" pay for the wall that stops the flight of their own people, the author closes the circle of populism in a chilling way. It is a warning that the "Shadow" of the title can also be the shadow of a civilization financing its own downfall. The aesthetic is no longer "beautiful," but necessarily ugly and confrontational.
This is one of the most politically charged pages in the book, where the shamanic journey is interrupted for a chilling glimpse into the societal abyss.
